The short version
BOxtract runs no servers and collects no analytics. By default it works entirely on your device. It only sends data anywhere if you choose to connect your own AI provider - and then only to that provider, on your own account.
Offline mode (default)
When no AI key is set, the region you capture is processed by the bundled Tesseract OCR engine inside your browser. The image and the extracted text never leave your device.
AI mode (optional)
If you add an OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), or xAI (Grok) API key, the captured image is sent to that provider to extract - and, if you turn on translation, translate - the text. That request goes directly from your browser to the provider you selected, using your key. It is handled under that provider's privacy policy. BOxtract does not store, log, copy, or relay your captures or text.
What is stored, and where
Your engine choice, optional model name, and API key are saved only in your browser's local extension storage so the extension can use them. They are never transmitted anywhere except as the authorization header on requests to the provider you chose. Remove them any time from the settings page or by uninstalling.
Permissions
BOxtract requests access to the current tab only when you click its icon (to capture and read the region), storage (to save your settings), and - only if you enable an AI provider - permission to reach that provider's API. It does not have standing access to your browsing.

Using BOxtract
BOxtract is a free browser extension that extracts text from a region you select on a page. By installing or using it, you agree to these terms. Only use it on content you have the right to read and copy.
Your API keys and costs
AI mode is optional and uses your own OpenAI, Anthropic, or xAI account and key. You are responsible for those keys, any usage costs, and following each provider's terms. BOxtract never bills you and never sees your key on a server - it stays in your browser.
No warranty
BOxtract is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. OCR and translation are best-effort and can contain errors; do not rely on the output for anything critical without checking it. To the extent allowed by law, BrewedOps is not liable for any damages arising from using the extension.
Changes
These terms may be updated as the extension evolves. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.
